The spear is one of the oldest known human innovations. It has also been continuously innovated since time immemorable. It is estimated the spear was first created approximately 500,000 years ago in southern Africa and is thought to be the first “composite tool” - a combining of tools. Its form in many instances is drawn from biomimicry, like a newly formed bud penetrating the ground surface searching for light. Today, we use the term “the tip of the spear” to describe a force that first makes contact with the enemy or to describe the most advanced, or cutting-edge unit leading the way in a mission. What better example of this is the spear-shaped B-2 bomber referred to as the tip of the spear, the most sophisticated and expensive aircraft ever produced able to strike any adversary, anywhere in the world, with near impunity.
